Writers are observers. Is this just a coincidence? My observations support the following: all the divorced women I know pursued a pet instead of another husband. I was no exception. I adopted Mickie the Mini-Pin during one of the saddest times of my life.
The Adoption
Even though I adopted her from a rescue organization in Huntington Beach, the truth is she rescued me. She was also a Tough Cookie, and the bond began.
I never knew the details of what happened during the first seven months of her life. Once the adoption was finalized, I took her to a different vet for a checkup. During the examination, the vet discovered two lacerations on her back hidden by the fur. What level of cruelty had this mini-pin soul survived? Since Mickie trusted few people, I could only imagine how she was mistreated and hoped I could help her.
Mickie’s Philosophy
Mickie’s philosophy about daily life is quite humorous and simple. Play first, obey later. Wag my stump of a tail and launch into the air as high as I can go when I see someone who is good to me. Be assertive about treats. Eat good food and pray better food falls on the floor to satisfy my gourmet needs. Be curious about the unfamiliar. Nap when I can no longer keep my eyes from flickering. Snuggle, snuggle, snuggle to be warm with the people I want to be with. I bark because I care. Always know who to be loyal to. Grumble at others when they cross into my space. Give kisses instead of bites, even though I really want to bite sometimes. Keep your private areas clean. If I do something wrong, the people who love me will give me another chance. Even though I had some bad breaks in my puppyhood, I am in a safe place now and can be myself. I prefer to make my own choices instead of being led by chains around my neck. Size and situation don’t matter when you’ve got a mighty attitude. Attitude and personality are my strengths. Have a favorite spot that is all my own when I need some peace and quiet. Love and protect my family and home with all I’ve got.
Loyalty And Empathy
How can some people not recognize or care that animals have a soul, the same as humans?
Whenever I was sad, Mickie was the first to notice. She would jump up on my lap and nudge me or try to lick my face. In many ways, she was a family member I could count on to have my back. There is no doubt in my mind that Mic would have defended me if anyone tried to physically harm me. How many humans do you know that would risk their life to save yours?
I genuinely miss her unconditional love and daily friendship.

RESOURCES
Over the years, I have found great information about organizations on Charity Navigator. If you are interested in rescuing an animal or donating to a cause, this resource would be an excellent place to start regarding mission statements, ratings, how the money received is spent, an organization’s effectiveness, what organizations are located near you, and other important facts.
It is a lifetime commitment to rescue an animal, so it is best to make an informed decision for all involved. Search Category Animals, or if you have an organization in mind you can enter the name in the search bar https://charitynavigator.org
In her memory, this post is dedicated to Mickie Fuller, my companion and protector for 15 and 1/2 years. She transitioned to the pain-free paradise of the Rainbow Bridge on March 26, 2021.
